Hello!
A quick one from me today – no review as such but a bit of news on the kebab front: Der Berliner is no more, and Döner Haus is shortly to be no more. Der Berliner, which opened (as a soft launch) in March, is to be replaced by Apostel, which opens this weekend, and Döner Haus is to rebrand and reboot in the New Year. Glasgow Live report that Apostel will do “Berlin style kebabs” alongside other street food, whereas Döner Haus have merely posted about their imminent demise on social media – here’s their Facebook post. No idea whether they’ll still do kebabs as part of a wider menu – have asked and will report back as and when I get a response.
Now, I get that food trends change over time. 10 years ago, it was pulled pork and gourmet burgers. These days, shawarma is really, I mean reallllly kicking off (I’m not joking when I say I’ve got about 6 reviews that need typing up) – but with ‘Babs the only gourmet kebab place left as of 2024, and they just do gyros now as far as sandwiches go, are gourmet kebabs dead? I sincerely hope not. Whilst the likes of GDK, Döner Shack and Yayas do a decent enough German doner, there’s still a place, I’d hope, for a slightly more upmarket offering.
Anyway, I said I’d keep this brief, so here’s a picture of what may well be my last ever mixed chilli doner – and it was in fine form tonight.
