Doner Kebab Pies Part 2: Paisley Pie Co.

(Part 1 – David Cox Butchers in Bridgeton – is here)

HOO!

So, I did a post about David Cox Butchers back in July (on the 13th to be precise), about their rather splendid kebab pies, and I finished by saying that I would follow up with another post about where to get pre-baked, warm, ready to eat kebab pies “tomorrow”. And here it is.

Now, some of you might have noticed that the day immediately following the 13th of July is not the 8th of October – if anything, that’s nearly three months. So what happened? Well, stuff happened. Anyway – where were we? Ahh yes. Kebab pies.

As I said before, these things are generally the preserve of football grounds trying to get themselves onto a @footyscran tweet on The Artist Formerly Known As Twitter, so it was a delight to find a place that sold them – annoyingly not in Glasgow, but within spitting distance. This is the Paisley Pie Company.

Located on Bridge Street – the bit just off the pedestrian high street that you have to go down the hill towards – they are open for the lucrative breakfast and lunch markets between 8am and 2.30pm Monday to Friday, and Saturdays 8 ’til 2, so not a place to go on a night out, but for the dedicated (or if you happen to work in a nearby office), they do the job. I was dedicated, so I bought two:

Credit to the Paisley Pie Co for the packaging – a paper bag is the usual bakery standard, but these came in a box. And with good reason – these were right out of the oven, and very hot. In fact, and I’m no science type, but I suspect that the liquid part of the filling was possibly the hottest thing known to mankind. The lady in the job advised to leave them ten minutes – even then I struggled. Sensibly, I gave the second one another 20 minutes and that was just about right.

So – are they any good? Well, they’re not as good as the ones from the butchers – but they’ll do. Whereas the David Cox ones had decent chunks of meat and a sauce with a kick to it, this one really wasn’t all that spicy. The sauce was ok but tasted like generic kebab sauce from a bottle and the doner meat was standard kebab shop fayre – more high street kebab shop than gourmet kebab shop. That being said – the pie bit was good – really decent thick pastry, more substantial than the shell pie.

Part of the reason this has taken so long to write up is because I was hoping to get a chance to go again to try some of their other pies – whilst the kebab pie could be a lot better, some of the other menu items, such as the South Indian Chilli Garlic pie, or even the cheeseburger(!) pie do look interesting, and I do hope someday to return to try some of the other things on the menu.

Paisley Pie Company, 26 Bridge Street, Paisley.

Doner Kebab Pie – some idiot forgot to note the price but it wasn’t unreasonable – from memory they were about Β£3something each.
